Oblong folio format with original decorated purple silk-covered boards, bound in a Japanese style with gilt and green decoration, gilt patterned end paper with all edges bright gilt.
The Charming Views in the Land of the Rising Sun is a 1904 photographic touring book of Japan, compiled by K. Ogawa and Mataro Crizuka, featuring collotype photographs primarily showcasing Japan's then-developing railway system. The book includes a foldout map and facing descriptions in English and brief Japanese captions for each photograph. Ogawa, a leading Japanese photographer, printer, and publisher of the Meiji era, was a pioneer in the field and was employed by the Imperial Government Railways to promote tourism. It is considered one of the earliest photographic touring books of its kind.
Condition: Outer boards in very good condition - scratch to binding on front cover and minor wrinkle to top left corner on rear - some foxing to title page and blank endpapers back and front, no foxing to plates, text or decorated side of endpapers - 1939 inscription in pencil to title page - text block is firm and clean - appears unread - see all images.
