A fine early 20th century English ship's compass by F. Smith & Sons of Southampton, housed within its original bronze and brass gimbal mounting.
The compass retains its glazed bowl enclosing a boldly designed compass card with black and white cardinal and intercardinal points, decorative fleur-de-lis north marker and maker's signature.
The instrument is fitted with its original prism sight assembly and spirit level, features associated with professional marine navigation.
Designed for use aboard ship, the compass is suspended within a substantial gimbal ring allowing it to remain level despite the movement of the vessel.
The mounting retains its original side trunnions, indicating installation within a binnacle or similar navigational housing.
