A fine 19th-century Italian trompe l'oeil oil on panel by Michelangelo Meucci (1840–1909), signed and dated 1875.
The composition depicts a kingfisher and woodpecker suspended from a nail against a painted wooden board, executed with considerable attention to detail and naturalistic observation.
Through the skilful use of shadow, texture and perspective, Meucci creates a convincing illusion of depth, a characteristic feature of the trompe l'oeil tradition.
