Xu Jiyu, courtesy name Jiannan, sobriquets Songkan and Mutian, and studio name Tuimizhai, was a native of Wutai County (present-day Xinzhou city) in Shanxi Province. An eminent statesman, scholar, and geologist, he played an important role in Qing intellectual and political life from the Daoguang era (1820-1850) through the Tongzhi reign (1861-1875). In the later years of his official career, he assisted Prince Gong Yixin (1833-1898) in managing foreign affairs and oversaw the Tongwen Guan (The School of Combined Learning), a government institution established in Beijing in 1862 to teach Western languages, science, and technology. Widely recognized as one of the earliest Chinese scholars to advocate the study of the West, Xu was honored by the New York Times as 'the Galileo of the East.' In 1853, a group of American missionaries in Ningbo, Zhejing Province, presented a stone tablet to the Washington National Monument in the United States. The tablet was inscribed with paragraphs from Xu Jiyu's publication Yinghuan Zhilue (Brief Records of the World), published in 1849, praising George Washington as a selfless leader who established a peaceful and democratic government.
