LU HAN (D.1636) Scholars Playing Go under Pine Trees Hanging scroll, ink on paper, signed Lu Han with an artist's seal and a collector's seal. 68 x 36 1/4in (172.5 x 92cm) Footnotes: Provenance: Collection of Yi Kuo-juei (1906-1990), thereafter by descent. Lu Han (ca.1590-1636), courtesy name Shaowei and sobriquet Xuehan, was a native of Hangzhou during the late Ming dynasty. He excelled at painting demon hunters, eccentric immortals and reclusive hermits. His depictions of female figures feature disheveled hair and unadorned garments, and his landscapes, rendered with audacious and expressive brushwork, evoke the bleak grandeur of deep forests and expansive lakes. He is said to have painted murals for the Zhongtian Temple in Hushu, Hangzhou, which were widely admired by his contemporaries. Known for his idiosyncratic personality, he reportedly spent half of each month drinking and the other half painting. He passed away at the age of forty-six. His great-grandson Lu Fei (1719-?) was also an accomplished painter and maintained close ties with the influential Hangzhou artist Ding Jing (1695-1765). Lot to be sold without reserve.
