An Egyptian turquoise faience tile fragment of a wedjet eye New Kingdom, Ramesside Period, 20th Dynasty, circa 1186-1070 B.C. 12cm high, 10cm wide Footnotes: Provenance: Horatio and Patsy Melas collection, formed in Alexandria, Egypt prior 1967 and then moved to Switzerland; and thence by descent to their son Kyros Melas and brought to London in 1989. The Horatio and Patsy Melas Collection; Chiswick Auctions, London, 11 May 2016, lot 82, where acquired by the present owner. This sizeable fragment was once part of a large tile, and is glazed on both the front and back. A wedjet eye is preserved, set above a woven basket, which is the hieroglyphic sign for 'all', and in this context means 'all protection'. A detail on a cartonnage mummy case in the collection of the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, Leiden, shows the same iconography of a wedjet eye above a woven basket, museum no. AMM1 (reproduced in J.H. Taylor, Egyptian Coffins, Aylesbury, p. 58, pl. 46 and 47). Cf. a tile with a similar glaze from the palace of Ramesses III at Tell el-Yahudiya in the British Museum, museum number EA12911.
