A good mid 18th century mahogany striking Balloon clock G. Burgess, Cheapside, London The case surmounted by a pineapple finial over a shaped top, the sides fitted with brass carrying handles and the front centred by a large applied brass mount depicting a sunburst mask, all above a moulded base and raised on cast brass decorated feet. The 7-inch white enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, signed to the centre G. Burgess, Cheapside, London, with pierced blued steel hands. The double fusee movement with verge escapement and four knopped pillars, striking the hours via a rack-and-snail mechanism on a bell mounted above the movement. The backplate finely shaped to follow the profile of the case and engraved with neoclassical foliate scenes and scrollwork, complete with matching securing brackets and retaining its original lacquered finish.
