About the Author: Dandang (1593-1673), also known as Puhe or Tonghe, styled Dandang, surnamed Tang, given name Tai, courtesy name Dalai, was a native of Jinning, Yunnan. He was a prominent monk, poet, painter, and calligrapher of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. Born into an official family, Dandang was once a tribute student but later abandoned his official career. After his mother's death, feeling that the dynasty was nearing its end and having no one to care for, he became a monk at Jizu Mountain in Dali. He studied poetry, calligraphy, and painting under masters such as Dong Qichang and Chen Meigong, and was renowned for his mastery of the three arts. More than two hundred of Dandang's paintings and calligraphy works survive, most of which are housed in the Yunnan Provincial Museum. His landscape paintings are simple and unadorned, and his calligraphy is mainly in running and cursive scripts. In his later years, he was particularly skilled in wild cursive script, with unrestrained brushstrokes.
