Arthur Pond (London circa 1705-1758) Portrait of Miss Hester Greville (1716-1796) in a White Dress with a Blue Ribbon unsigned; inscribed 'Miss Hester Greville' (upper left) pastel on paper 61.0 x 45.5 cm (24 x 17 15/16 in). framed 77.0 x 60.4 x 3.0 cm (30 5/16 x 23 3/4 x 1 3/16 in). Footnotes: This portrait depicts Hester Greville, the daughter of Algernon Greville (1678-1720) and Mary Somerset (1692-1769). Hester kept an apartment at Hampton Court Palace from 1770. This work, attributed previously at times to William Hoare and Francis Cotes, has recently been reattributed to Arthur Pond, whose account books include a portrait of 'Miss Greville' painted on June 8, 1747, that almost certainly corresponds with the present work. The present work will be included in Neil Jeffares's online Dictionary of Pastellists before 1800 as J.597.204. We would like to thank Neil Jeffares for his kind assistance in cataloguing this lot on the basis of digital photographs.
