Peter Lanyon (British, 1918-1964) Untitled (Mrs W. H. Lanyon) signed and dated 'GPLanyon/37' (lower right) oil on panel 40.5 x 31cm (15 15/16 x 12 3/16in). (unframed) with a further oil painting, Untitled (Hillside), 1938, on the reverse, by the same hand Footnotes: Literature Toby Treves, Peter Lanyon: Catalogue Raisonné of the Oil Paintings and Three-dimensional Works, Modern Art Press, London, 2018, p.110, cat.no.73 (col.ill.) (recto); p.118, cat.no.94 (col.ill.) (verso) The painting depicts the artist's mother, Lilian, seated at a table facing the viewer. The signature and date, suggest Lanyon likely painted the work whilst on holiday with his mother and sister in Holland and Belgium during the summer of 1937. The scale of the landscape scene depicting distant mountains on the reverse of the work, suggests the painting is a depiction of somewhere in southern Africa.
