Harold Gilman (British, 1876-1919) Baby in a Cradle signed 'H.Gilman' (lower right) oil on canvas 33 x 55.5cm (13 x 21 7/8in). Footnotes: Provenance Sale; Christie's, South Kensington, lot 97 (date untraced), where acquired by the present owner Private Collection, U.K. The identity of the baby in this charming painting is elusive. Gilman made paintings and drawings as babies of his four children by his first wife Grace, born between 1903 and 1908 (one died in infancy), and of his son, born 1917, by his second wife Sylvia. The date of this picture does not accord with their births, nor with those of any of his nieces or nephews. One possibility is that the baby is Elizabeth, the daughter of his great friend Spencer Gore, who was born in October 1912 when Gore and his wife Mollie were temporarily living at Gilman's house in Letchworth Garden City.
