Footnotes: Provenance With Stone Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, where acquired by the present owner Private Collection, U.K. Exhibited Newcastle-upon-Tyne, The Stone Gallery, Recent Works by Norman Cornish, cat.no.20 The present lot marries Norman Cornish's two careers as a miner and as an artist. He started his mining career aged 14 and shortly after started a sketching club in the Spennymoor Settlement, which later became known as 'The Pitman's Academy'. He was represented by The Stone Gallery from 1959, and the partnership lasted 21 years. The Stone Gallery hosted solo and mixed exhibitions and managed enquiries to promote his work, enabling Cornish's great success, which led to his transition from being a miner to becoming a professional artist. This work exemplifies Cornish's practice of documenting the daily life of a miner with great reverence and pride. The mining scene is echoed in the materiality of the medium employed as Cornish uses charcoal and chalk, embodying the mining industry in the North-East.
