Conroy Maddox (British, 1912-2005) The Day They Took Over the World signed and dated 'Conroy Maddox 63' (lower left) watercolour, gouache and pencil on paper 33.5 x 48cm (13 3/16 x 18 7/8in). Footnotes: Provenance Sale, Bonhams, London, 15 July 2008, lot 228 With Louise Kosman, Edinburgh, where acquired by Janet Beat, 4 June 2009 Their sale; Bonhams, London, 29 March 2023, lot 40, where acquired by the present owner In the mid-1960s Maddox moved to 17A Lambolle Road, Belsize Park, where he established a permanent studio in which he worked for the rest of his life. The move was accompanied by a new narrative and fragmentary style characterised by bold colours and multiple and overlapping imaging that resembled collage. This brief phase began in the 1960s, when Maddox had two one-man exhibitions in London. (London, Zwemmer Gallery, Conroy Maddox, Collage - Gouaches, 22 February-18 March 1967 and London, John Whibley Gallery, Conroy Maddox, Recent Paintings, 7-30 November 1967). By his subsequent one-man show (London, Hamet Gallery, Conroy Maddox, 12 January-5 February 1972) his style had reverted to a painstakingly painterly approach. The works produced during the 1960s phase are rare. These included piqued references to political themes and conflicts of the time, such as the Vietnam war, Lyndon Baines Johnson's presidency and Che Guevara. The title of the current work alludes to warfare and armed struggle. We are grateful to Dr Silvano Levy for compiling this catalogue entry.
