Anthony Hill (British, 1930-2020) Low Relief signed 'anthony Hill' (on cobex verso) laminated plastic (cobex) 30.5 x 61cm (12 x 24in). Executed in 1963 Footnotes: Provenance With Laurent Delaye Gallery, London Sale; Bonhams, London, 1 July 2020, lot 69, where acquired by the present owners Private Collection, U.K. This is a small version of a larger work, the first in which Hill used white-black-white Cobex (an industrially produced laminated PVC material) without engraving or the addition of other materials. The resulting progression is articulated as the viewer moves around the work and its black core becomes visible. The thematic content is a potentially endless progression; it echoes Hill's Cut in a Continuum, 1955, a work around the net of the cuboctahedron, as well as his first relief construction, Progression of Rectangles, 1954. Low Relief is an extremely reduced, pure expression of a limitless series. We are grateful to Mark Thomson and the Anthony Hill Estate for their assistance in cataloguing this lot.
