He attested into the Grenadier Guards on 15 November 1881. He served in the Sudan campaign between 26 September 1884 - 16 July 1885. His service papers confirm that he is entitled to the clasps, The Nile 1884-85 and Abu Klea and is on the roll for the 2nd Grenadier Guards. He was discharged on 14 November 1893.
