BINDING KINGSLEY (CHARLES)The Water-Babies, green morocco gilt with ornamental arabesques by Morrell (signed 'Morrell Binder'), gilt dentelles, g.e., faded, 8vo, Macmillan, 1890 Footnotes: FINELY BOUND BY MORRELL FOR THE NOTABLE 19TH CENTURY BOOKDEALER TREGASKIS. The Morrell Bindery was founded in 1861 when W.T. Morrell acquired the Soho workshop of the celebrated binder Charles Lewis at 17 Frith Street. After his death in 1887 the firm passed to his son W.J. Morrell, who brought his brother John into partnership; by 1891 W.J. & J. Morrell were employing fifty people, with all binding done by hand and gilding and marbling carried out on the premises. They were particularly noted for bindings in the manner of Roger Payne alongside their own original designs. Provenance: 'This volume bound by Morrell was exhibited in a collection of bindings brought together in 1891 by J. Tregaskis in Holborn. He distributed 100 copies of the book among the most noted book binders of Europe', ink annotation on endpaper. Tregaskis (1850-1926) was a Cornish-born printer who came to bookselling late in life through his wife's shop at the Caxton Head, 232 High Holborn, rising to become one of the leading antiquarian booksellers in London and the fourth ABA president in 1910. He and his wife were notable for their innovative exhibitions, most famously a 1894 display of seventy-three copies of the Kelmscott Press Tale of King Florus and the Fair Jehane in unique bindings from twenty-seven different countries (now held at the Rylands) which attracted sufficient attention to earn them a royal summons to show the books to Queen Victoria at Windsor. The firm, known for its elaborate catalogues and wide-ranging stock from manuscripts to Japanese prints, remained active until 1939 under subsequent family members (ABA website).
