Private collection, UK (acquired from the above). Born in 1882, Oswald Couldrey grew up in Abingdon before attending Pembroke College, Oxford in 1901. He later gained a teaching qualification and in 1909 moved to India to work in the Education Service of the Indian Civil Service, subsequently becoming Principal of the Rajamundry College of Art in Andra Pradesh. Couldrey lived in India for ten years. Whilst there he became enamoured with the landscapes, art and music of India and built up quite the reputation with his students as being a Guru of Indian art and culture. For this reason he has been acknowledged as a significant influence on the renaissance of Indian Art in Andra Pradesh in the early twentieth century. Despite completing a number of watercolours and sketches, Couldrey considered himself as more of a writer and poet. His most famous publication South Indian Hours is a vivid autobiographical account of his years in India. This text also includes illustrations of other examples of Couldrey's watercolours. It has been difficult to find any written documentation about Couldrey's time in Ceylon. In fact, this album of watercolours depicting striking landscapes and local scenery seems to be the only evidence that he visited the country. Given the dates inscribed on the various watercolours within, Couldrey would have visited Ceylon whilst he was living in India. Anna Shuttleworth (1927-2021) was a renowned British cellist and Professor at the Royal College of Music. Her father, Lee Shuttleworth was friends with Oswald Couldrey, and it is believed this album was a gift from him to the Shuttleworth family.
