In the aftermath of the Boxer Rebellion the Imperial University of Tokyo commissioned a detailed study of the 'arrangement, construction and decoration of the Palace Buildings of the 'Forbidden City' and other palace grounds'. The fine series of 172 large photographs by Kazumasa Ogawa (1860-1929, a pioneering Japanese photographer) were a particular revelation as the complex had previously been 'jealously kept from public sight'.
