In three great voyages Cook did more to clarify the geographical knowledge of the southern hemisphere than all his predecessors together had done. He was the first really scientific navigator, and his voyages made great contributions to many fields of knowledge' (Hill). Captain James Cook undertook three celebrated voyages to the Pacific and Southern Hemisphere, each with ambitious objectives: observing the transit of Venus, searching for a rumoured southern continent, pushing as far south as possible to circumnavigate the globe at high latitudes, and seeking the Northwest Passage. His first voyage alone saw him chart approximately 5,000 miles of coastline, including pioneering work around the islands he named the Society Islands, achievements that earned him sufficient renown to be entrusted with two further expeditions. His third voyage, however, would be his last. He was killed at Kealakekua Bay following a confrontation in which he attempted to take the Hawaiian king, Kalani'ōpuʻu, hostage.
