Joseph Dudman (1790-1864) was born son of a Deptford shipbuilder and entered the service of the East India Company in 1806, sailing between London to Canton for more than twenty years on the Cumberland until 1812, and then on the Inglis. He was made captain of the Inglis in 1828, and shortly afterwards was involved in a historic mutiny on board ship. Proceedings were held at St. Helena, and Captain Dudman was praised for his part in quelling the mutiny. He made his last voyage in 1833-1834, when his passengers from China to London included the family of the Rev. Dr. Morrison. He died in 1864 and his obituary appeared in the London Times on 6 September of that year. Captain Dudman's career is extremely well documented. All his logs and ledgers are held in the National Maritime Museum, London, and other important papers relating to Dudman are in the India Office Library. The present work ranks among the finest of Lamqua's portraits. It is also painted on a Western-style stretcher, in common with the work of George Chinnery (1774-1852), and only used by Lamqua for his finest works.
