Sir Francis Cook, 4th Baronet (1907-1978) was an artist and exhibited at the Royal Academy and elsewhere; he was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and an Associate of the Royal Society of British Artists, making Jersey his home from 1948. His friendship with other artists of his time accounts for many of the 20th Century paintings in the collection, probably acquired as gifts or by exchange. Sydney Lough Thompson and his wife Ethel moved from New Zealand to France in 1911, where they remained for over two decades. During this period Thompson developed a distinctive Post-Impressionist inspired style of painting. Subjects were found in the regional life and landscapes of Brittany and Provence and eventually a lifestyle evolved that was structured around the artist's work. Leading an itinerant existence, Thompson and his family often spent the summer and autumn in Concarneau (Brittany), then travelled south to Provence for the winter and spring. Breton fishermen were recurring subjects in Thompson's compositions, much like the ones in the present work.
