Khampa dzong was a fortress in Tibet, approximately 15 miles north of Sikkimese border, strategically placed on the major Himalayan trading route linking India to Tibet. 'Here, in 1903 prior to the invasion, the final attempt for meaningful negotiations took place between Younghusband and White with the Tibetans, trying to settle the differences that ultimately led to the British invasion' (K. and P.D. Meyer, In the Shadow of the Himalayas. Tibet. Bhutan. Nepal. Sikkim. A Photographic Record by John Claude White 1883-1908, 2005, p.107). The British Library a set of these images (Endangered Archives Programme, Ref. EAP166/2/1/4/52[-59]), also joined as a panorama and captioned 'Somewhere in Tibet'. Provenance: Eva. B. Hodges (1866-1942), ownership inscription on verso of image. Eva was the wife of Walter H. Hodges (1868-1938), who acted as assistant to the Political Officer at Sikkim from 1890 to 1917.
