Hodges, during his career in the administration Sikkim from c.1890 to 1918 , including PHOTOGRAPHY Album of vintage photographs recording major events and places in Hodges career, including the repatriation of Chinese troops from Lhasa in 1913 (26), visit to 1911 Delhi Durbar (20, including one of the Sikkim camp tent), photo cards of the Dalai Lama and Tashi Lama, views in Sikkim (c.46, including Gangtok with the royal residency, Hodges' bungalow, groups with Sidkeong, etc.), albumen or gelatin silver prints, all mounted and captioned (by ?Hodges or his wife Eva) in white beneath image, images typically 90 x 140mm., or similar, original cloth, oblong 4to, [c.1908-1915] Album of vintage (mostly private) photographs relating to Hodges family life at Gangtok (Maharaja Kumar's house in construction, and in the snow; 'Testa [river] through which some of the [Younghusband] Mission's yaks forded', the bazaar, the Kumar's horse and servant, 'cobblers who made shoes for the Sikkim coolies', the Kumar's daughters, the family bungalow, etc.), and Darjeeling (where the children went to school), c.95 albumen or gelatin silver prints, most pasted-in, variable fading, various sizes and shapes, typically 100 x 75mm., or smaller, original cloth (worn with loss to spine), small oblong 4to, [c.1904] A group of approximately loose (mostly) gelatin silver print photographs of Gangtok, Sikkim, Sidkeong Tulka and family, the Hodges, etc., various sizes, [early twentieth century] JOHN CLAUDE WHITE. Three photographs of John Claude White, political officer in Sikkim from 1889 to 1908, and photographer, 2 SIGNED BY THE SITTER, various sizes, some surface wear and marginal tears, undated; and a large printed presentation certificate of thanks, from Raghu Nandam Ram, to White on his leaving Gangtok, decorative border printed in colours, 680 x 420mm., Calcutta, H.C. Gangooly & Co., 1908 HODGES (W.H.) Manuscript lecture ('Sikkim'), read by Hodges at the Overseas House, Edinburgh in 1934), 22 pages, in ink, held with string at punch hole upper left, small 4to, undated; with another draft copy in pencil in notebook; ; a small group of letters written by Hodges to his wife, dated between 1909 and 1911 Group of manuscripts in Tibetan or local texts, including invitations, comments on local disputes, etc, most with red signature stamp Several manuscript, typescript or printed accounts by Walter or Eva Hodges, including an account of the 1901 Census tour in western Sikkim, 'War Dance' [description of a Sikkim dance, ?printed at Gangtok], and 'The Caves of Sangzung. Sikkim. January 1901' [typescript essay, with manuscript corrections]; a 4-page printed 'Notice', with several red ink annotations, concerning information on 'Traveller's Bungalows in Sikkim and the Darjeelling District. July 1911' Miscellaneous, including several charmingly illustrated letters from sent by Eva Hodges from Sikkim to her children Phyllis and Gwen; and some early examples of the children's 'art work'; Walter and Edith's passports, and copies of their baptism certificates; testimonial letter praising Hodges ('... has done excellent service in my office where he is still single handed...' signed by John Claude White, September 1896; a letter, and a Christmas card from Captain Willoughby; manuscript account by Phyllis Hodges of a trip to Sri Lanka and India undertaken in 1904; postcards of Darjeeling and Sikkim; an ink plan of the family bungalow [which still stands] at Gangtok, and research materials, notes and photographs made by W.H. Hodges grand-daughter (Collection) Footnotes: Provenance: Walter H. Hodges (1868-1938), who acted as assistant to the Political Officer at Sikkim from 1890 to 1917, first under John Claude White, and subsequently Sir Charles Bell. He was actively involved with the Sikkim royal family, attending the inauguration of both Sidkeong tulku, and his successor Tashi Namgyal, both the Delhi Durbars of 1903 and 1911, whilst living with his family in a bungalow he had built for himself at Gangtok, Sikkim; by family descent to the vendor.
