Attributed to Justinian Gantz (British, 1802-1862) A European house beside a river, Madras watercolour 28 x 32.4cm (11 x 12 3/4in). Footnotes: Provenance With Sabin Galleries, London. Private collection, UK (purchased from the above). Thence by descent to the current owner. Justinian Gantz was the eldest son of John Gantz (1772-1853), an artist/architect of Austrian extraction employed as a draftsman and surveyor by the East India Company from 1800 to 1803. By 1807 John Gantz was living in Madras where he set up a lithographic press, which became a family business where Justinian worked alongside his father. Justinian seems to have specialised in making drawings of European houses and seven such drawings are in the collection of the India Office Library (M. Archer, British Drawings in the India Office Library, Volume II: Official and Professional Artists, London 1969, pp. 605-6).
