Venieris, Khartoum'), others smaller, many from private cameras, variable toning and fading, many captioned in ink on the mount, half morocco, covers detached and lacking spines, oblong large 8vo and 4to, [c.1898-1905] Footnotes: Includes 12 views of Khartoum by 'M. Venieris, Kartoum [sic]' (all signed and captioned, and some numbered, in the negative, including 'The Khedive's Passage. Greek Triumphal Arch', 'Omdourman's market' 'The Palace and the Gardens - Khartoum', 'The Palace - the Government Building and the Poste, Khartoum', etc.); 2 portrait groups (standing/seated) of the founding members of the Khartoum Masonic Lodge (No. 2877), consecrated in December 1901, with General Sir Reginald Wingate (then Governor-General of the Sudan). Informal views of Khartoum and environs include the prison, a Berber town in the district 'where Mahdi hid when fleeing Khalifa, escaping from Omdurman 1895', Khartoum zoo, 'Berber Show 15-4-04' (13), including camel races, 'judging the cotton', 'crowding around the silver tent', 'Horse race - native winner', 'Judging sheep', laying foundations of the river wall, the tramway station, Government House, the Suakin-Berber Railway (7, including 'laying the line - railhead', 'Halfara station' [with engine], the engine, local women in a dust storm 'who refused to be photoed [sic] & turned their back on the photographer'), Gordon College, Sindar's Palace, local inhabitants (including a wooden 'Wheel of Pleasure', raising water from a well using oxen, carting stone, brick making, a wedding feast, etc.), the Drage family house and gardens, staff. Includes images of a visit to Omdurman, including a 'carriage captured by Dervishes in the first campaign', 'view from the roof of the Khalifa's house. Ruins of Madhi tomb on right', 'in the slave villages', and 'remnants of the Mahdi's tomb'. At the end are seven rare images relating to the final days of the Mahdist War, including Osman Sheikh ed Din ('Sheikh ed Din. Wounded'), 'Emir of Tayadia', 'Kahlifa abdullah' , 'Khalifa and Fedil' and 'Ahmed Fedil' (all three showing the Mahdist leaders dead), 'Khalifa's Jebba' (displayed with blood stains), and Yunus al Dikyam. Loosely inserted are an invitation addressed to Colonel Drage requesting his attendance at a dinner held in honour of H.R.H. Princess Henry of Battenberg at Governor General Wingate's Palace, Khartoum; a letter on Balmoral headed paper from Sir Charles Frederick, en route to Buckingham Palace with 'their Majesties', where he to meet Drago; a menu for 'Her Majesty's Dinner, Monday 21st Nov. 1895' held at Windsor Castle. Provenance: William Henry Drage (1852-1915), and family (one album signed 'Rosie Drage, 17/2/02'). Drage is pictured in a number of the images. He served almost his whole career in Sudan, from his first involvement as part of the Sudan Expedition (1884-85) until his retirement from the Egyptian Service, holding the rank of Lieut.-Colonel in 1904. He went with the Expedition to Dongola (1896), and was present at the Battle of Khartoum, and the capture of Abu Hamed and the subsequent occupation of Berber.
