Walker after Cresswell, one chromolithographed map, tissue guards, additional lithograph depicting the home coming civic reception given by the town of Kings Lynn for Cresswell [see footnote] loosely inserted, some light soiling and spotting (mostly marginal), publisher's printed wrappers, spine repaired, soiled [Abbey Travel 644; Sabin 17490], folio (825 x 445mm.), Day & Son, 25 July, 1854 Footnotes: VERY RARE COMPLETE SET OF CRESSWELL'S VIEWS OF THE ENTRAPMENT AND ABANDONMENT OF H.M.S. INVESTIGATOR IN THE ARCTIC ICE, during the Expedition led by Robert McClure in 1850. The primary purpose was to discovery the fate of John Franklin, but during the voyage McClure became the first person to confirm and transit the Northwest Passage by a combination of sea travel and sledging. The Expedition crew spent three years trapped in the pack ice, before eventually abandoning their ship, and making their escape across the ice. Rescued by the HMS Resolute, which was itself later lost to the ice, McClure returned to England in 1854, where he was knighted and rewarded for completing the passage. In 2010 the wreck of the HMS Investigator was discovered near Banks Island in the Northwest Territories. Included in the lot is a tinted lithographed view 'To Samuel Gurney Cresswell, Esq. R.N. of H.M.S. Investigator. This Engraving of the Presentation of the Address of the Mayor, Corporation & Burgesses of King's Lynn on his return from the Arctic Regions, being the first person to have traversed the North West Passage...' by E.
