Wilson 8 - 29 December 1913, catalogue no. 153, titled 'Cape Barne, September 24, 1911, 6am.' Edward Wilson, having served on Scott's Discovery Expedition (1901-04), was appointed as the chief scientific officer on Scott's Terra Nova Expedition. During this voyage he accompanied Cherry-Garrard and Bowers on a trip to Cape Crozier to collect emperor penguin eggs (famously known as 'The Worst Journey in the World'), before being chosen as one of the five men making up Scott's team that reached the South Pole. Along with his companions he died on the return journey. Herbert Ponting took a classic photograph ('Point of the Barne Glacier, where it turns round to the bay before cape Barne. September 18th 1911') in the same week as Wilson executed this watercolour.
