Dr Edward Adrian Wilson (British, 1872-1912) 'Cape Barne - Sept. 24. 1911 6am.' inscribed as titled on mount (cut from original card), bears inscription 'E A Wilson/of Scott's Antarctic expedition 1910- 1913' (on backing board) watercolour 8 x 8cm (3 1/8 x 3 1/8in). a circular sheet laid to card Footnotes: Exhibited London, The Alpine Club Gallery, British Antarctic Exhibition 1910-1913, Exhibition of Antarctic Sketches and Watercolours by Dr. Edward A. Wilson 8 - 29 December 1913, catalogue no. 153, titled 'Cape Barne, September 24, 1911, 6am.' Edward Wilson, having served on Scott's Discovery Expedition (1901-04), was appointed as the chief scientific officer on Scott's Terra Nova Expedition. During this voyage he accompanied Cherry-Garrard and Bowers on a trip to Cape Crozier to collect emperor penguin eggs (famously known as 'The Worst Journey in the World'), before being chosen as one of the five men making up Scott's team that reached the South Pole. Along with his companions he died on the return journey. Herbert Ponting took a classic photograph ('Point of the Barne Glacier, where it turns round to the bay before cape Barne. September 18th 1911') in the same week as Wilson executed this watercolour.
