AMERICAN CIVIL WAR Map shewing the principal places in Virginia and Maryland at present occupied by the Hostile Armies, double-page lithographed map, light toning and 6 small single wormholes, small tears to edges, 310 x 400mm., Topographical Depot, War Office, [1862] Footnotes: RARE. We could only trace one other copy, held in the National Archives, Kew (FO 925/1823). It shows the area between Washington and Winchester: roads, rivers and railways. The troops' positions are not indicated. During the early 1860s, the British military closely monitored the American Civil War, partly to learn new modern warfare tactics, and partly due to the 'Trent Affair', which almost brought England into the war on the side of the Confederacy.
