CHINA - CABINET CARDS Album of photographs of the Chinese diplomat Marquis Tseng [Zeng Jize] and family, 8 photographic albumen cabinet cards (140 x 100mm.), a contemporary letter in English written from 49 Portland Place, London (now the Chinese embassy) and a visiting card of The Marquis Tseng, all loose inserted, contemporary black calf, and slipcase with catch (worn), 8vo (195 x 145mm.), [1880s] Footnotes: Marquis Tseng (1839-1890) was an important Chinese diplomat, who held prestigious postings from 1878 to 1886 in London, Paris and St. Petersburg (where he was responsible for signing the Treaty of St. Petersburg in which Russia ceded back to China various territories of the Ili region). The cabinet card portraits depict Marquis Tseng and his wife (both signed), their three sons (King East, King Home and King Pole), each identified in ink, and two unidentified girls (possibly their daughters), and a young Chinese man. That of Marquis Tseng was taken by Alexander Bassano of Bond Street, those of his wife and daughters by G. & R. Lavis of Eastbourne, and the three boys by W. Blackwall of Folkestone.
