Caire (1837-1918), who moved from his homeland of Guernsey to Australia in 1858. Having established a successful studio in Melbourne he later became principal photographer with the Anglo-Australasian Photo Company, specialising in landscape photography. 'He had an imagination and feeling, an artist's sense of beauty, and such a deep and abiding love of this bush of ours, that it had some special significance to him, which was unknown to... any of his contemporaries' (John Cato, The Story of the Camera in Australia, 1957).
