Pair of George IV Sterling Silver Wine Coolers, London, 1829-30, John Bridge for Rundell, Bridge & Rundell, each urn form with a scrolling grapevine motif and Bacchus heads to the lower body, with interior liner, engraved 'RUNDELL BRIDGE ET RUNDELL AURIFICES REGIS LONDINI' to base and ducal coat of arms to foot and interior collar, ht. 10 1/2 in., approx. 313.7 troy oz. Note: The monogram is that of Harriet, Duchess of St. Albans (1777-1837), wife of William Aubrey de Vere, 9th Duke of St Albans, widow of Thomas Coutts, the banker. Born Harriet Mellon, she became an actress celebrated for her beauty, who in 1815 married the banker Thomas Coutts. After his death in 1822, Coutts bequeathed her the bulk of his estate, including his bank, properties, his extensive service of plate comprising some 35,000 ounces of silver, and the sum of £600,000. In 1827,a very wealthy Mrs. Coutts married William Beauclerk, 9th Duke of St. Albans. She was a prolific patron of the arts, amassing an impressive collection of Regency silver by some of the best silversmiths of the time.
