Description
(1919-1994) German machine gunner with the 1. MG-Schütze 9./Grenadier-Regiment 213. Awarded the Knight's Cross for actions during a January 1942 counter-attack launched by his Infanterie-Regiment 213 on the town of Bairasch, during one of the many battles that marked the Crimean campaign. The town was recaptured by the Germans after fierce combat, and then saw the Soviets launch an assault of their own the following day. Unfried played a major role in mastering a critical situation that prevented a Soviet breakthrough. An early S.P., 4 in. x 5.75 in., wartime or early post-war from the studio 'Foto Berberich Ansbach', photo shows Unfried as an NCO in a serious chest-up pose, wearing his combat uniform and the freshly awarded Knights Cross. Signed across chest in blue ink. Fine.
