Description
Rare Deutsche Reichspost eagle, typically displayed on the front of German Reichspost trucks, vans, and also appearing on street trolleys, this smaller cast aluminum alloy eagle, 15.25 in. wide x 9.75 in. tall, is a typical Third Reich national eagle gripping a wreath containing a mobile swastika within. The swastika has been painted red, the wreath green and the eagle gold, very likely in the postwar years, and it could easily be restored. The eagle bears on verso two uppercase 'V's in relief, one on each wing. Further marked on verso: 'F. HUDEC[?] WIEN' on the top of the post. There also appear three threaded holes into which machine screws would be fitted from behind the eagle and its supporting structure, and multiple examples have been found with these identical threaded screw-holes, indicating these were originally attached in this fashion, as opposed to the regularly encountered Reichsbahn eagles that have been retro-fitted with threaded holes by a collector. These smaller Reichspost eagles are actually much more difficult to acquire than train eagles!
