Description
(1887-1965) Founder of the Taittinger champagne house and president of the municipal council of Paris in May 1943, as the Germans occupied the city, and held this position until the Liberation of Paris in August 1944. A group of five letters ca. 1924-1927, on letterhead of the Chamber of Deputies to various individuals, including the editor of ‘Journal de Debats’. Of particular note is a T.L.S., March 6, 1926, in which Taittinger writes: ‘…Given the present situation, our proposal for the dissolution of the Chamber [of Deputies] is of burning urgency…’. WITH: a manuscript A.L.S. signed on behalf of Taittinger, Apr. 13, 1924, sending thanks to unnamed gentleman for his support and offering him compensation for such. In 1926, the French Chamber of Deputies (part of the Third Republic) was characterized by intense political instability following the 1924 elections, which had initially brought a left-wing Cartel des Gauches to power. The year marked a shift to the center-right, leading to the return of Raymond Poincaré as Prime Minister in July 1926 to stabilize the franc. Overall very good, six pieces.
