The STS-78 crew autographed this commemorative cacheted cover honoring the Life and Microgravity Spacelab (LMS) mission. Signed in ink by all seven crew members: Terence T. Henricks, Kevin R. Kregel, Richard M. Linnehan, Susan J. Helms, who has additionally inscribed the cover “To Sam Kloda,” Charles E. Brady Jr., Jean-Jacques Favier, and Robert Thirsk.

Launched aboard Space Shuttle Columbia on June 20, 1996, STS-78 completed a then-record 16-day mission devoted almost entirely to scientific research. Carrying the Life and Microgravity Spacelab module, the crew conducted more than forty experiments examining the effects of long-duration spaceflight on the human body, while also advancing research in fluid physics, materials science, biotechnology, and combustion. The mission provided a wealth of scientific data that helped lay the groundwork for long-duration expeditions aboard the International Space Station and future human exploration beyond low Earth orbit.

Terence T. Henricks (b. 1952) is a retired U.S. Air Force colonel and NASA astronaut who commanded STS-78, overseeing one of the most productive scientific missions of the Space Shuttle program.

Kevin R. Kregel (b. 1956) is a former U.S. Air Force pilot and NASA astronaut who flew four Space Shuttle missions, serving as pilot on STS-70 and STS-78 before later commanding STS-87 and STS-99.

Richard M. Linnehan (b. 1957) is a veterinarian and former NASA astronaut who flew four Space Shuttle missions and contributed extensively to life sciences research and International Space Station assembly operations.

Susan J. Helms (b. 1958) is a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant general and NASA astronaut who flew five Space Shuttle missions and served aboard the International Space Station. She co-held the world record for the longest spacewalk for nearly eighteen years.

Charles E. Brady Jr. (1951–2006) was a physician, U.S. Navy captain, and NASA astronaut who served as a mission specialist on STS-78, conducting biomedical experiments that advanced the understanding of human adaptation to spaceflight.

Jean-Jacques Favier (1949–2023) was a French engineer and CNES astronaut who became the second French citizen to fly aboard the Space Shuttle, representing France in the international scientific research conducted during STS-78.

Robert Thirsk (b. 1953) is a Canadian physician, engineer, and CSA astronaut who later became the first Canadian to complete a long-duration mission aboard the International Space Station, accumulating more than 200 days in space during his distinguished career.
