NASA commemorative presentation display measuring 20 x 16” honoring the Space Shuttle Discovery STS-51-D mission and the Statue of Liberty Restoration Project. The professionally mounted display features an affixed flown STS-51-D mission patch, color photographs of the Space Shuttle Discovery launch and the shuttle alongside the Statue of Liberty, and the original presentation certificate issued to The U.S. Post Office in recognition of its participation in the restoration project.

The presentation certificate is hand signed by Glynn S. Lunney, Manager of the National Space Transportation System (STS) Program, and states that the mission patch “was flown aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery (STS 51-D) April 12-19, 1985.” The mission patch bears the names of the seven-member crew: Karol J. Bobko, Donald E. Williams, Jeffrey A. Hoffman, David M. Walker, Charles D. Walker, S. David Griggs, and Senator Jake Garn.

Glynn S. Lunney (1936-2021) was one of NASA’s original flight directors and a central figure in the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, and Space Shuttle programs. He served as Lead Flight Director during Apollo and played a key role during the Apollo 13 mission, coordinating critical operations that helped return the crew safely to Earth. Lunney later managed the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project and served as Manager of NASA’s Space Transportation System Program, overseeing major aspects of the early Space Shuttle era.
