Cecil Powell autographed NASA M2/F3 Lifting Body commemorative cover honoring the agency’s experimental lifting body flight test program at Edwards Air Force Base. The cover is postmarked Edwards, California, November 9, 1972, and identifies Flight No. 38-53 with the printed designation “Pilot: Cecil Powell, USAF.” Powell has signed in black ink and added the inscription, “USAF M2/F3 Lifting Body Pilot.”

Cecil Powell was a U.S. Air Force test pilot assigned to NASA’s lifting body flight research program at Edwards Air Force Base. He flew the Northrop M2-F3, an experimental unpowered lifting body aircraft developed to study controlled atmospheric reentry and low-speed landing characteristics. Data gathered during the lifting body program contributed directly to the aerodynamic design and landing concepts later incorporated into the Space Shuttle program.
