The cover is completed in manuscript with the flight details, including the December 15, 1986 flight date, the mission purpose noted as “Logistics,” and remarks reading “El Paso → Houst,” indicating a flight from El Paso to Houston. Stephen Scott Oswald (born 1951) is a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel and NASA astronaut who flew on three Space Shuttle missions. He served as pilot of STS-42 in 1992 and STS-56 in 1993, and commanded STS-67 in 1995, the second flight of the Astro observatory. Before joining NASA, Oswald was a U.S. Air Force test pilot and accumulated extensive experience in high-performance military aircraft. Over his three missions, he logged more than 33 days in space.
