Fred Haise autographed this complete Life magazine Special Edition, To the Moon and Back, adding the desirable mission inscriptions, “Apollo 11 BU LMP” and “Apollo 13 LMP,” beneath his signature in black ink on the front cover. The special issue celebrates the history of America’s lunar exploration and features extensive coverage of the Apollo program, including the first Moon landing and the missions that followed.

Fred Haise (b. 1933) served as the Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo 13, the ill-fated 1970 mission that became one of NASA’s greatest demonstrations of courage, ingenuity, and teamwork. Although the mission never landed on the Moon after an oxygen tank explosion crippled the spacecraft, Haise, Commander James A. Lovell, Jr., and Command Module Pilot John L. “Jack” Swigert safely returned to Earth following one of the most dramatic rescue efforts in the history of space exploration. Prior to Apollo 13, Haise had also served as the backup Lunar Module Pilot for Apollo 11, training alongside Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin and standing ready to fly had circumstances required.
