Fred Haise autographed commemorative cover honoring NASA’s Gulfstream II Shuttle Training Aircraft (STA) program. Postmarked at Edwards, California, on February 26, 1981, the cover features a cachet commemorating an Orbiter Landing Evaluation Test Flight conducted at NASA Flight Research Center, Edwards Air Force Base. The cachet identifies the flight crew as Fred Haise and Richard Truly with a flight time of two hours. Haise has signed the cover in black ink across the lower right.

Fred W. Haise Jr. (b. 1933) is a NASA astronaut and former U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Air Force pilot best known as the lunar module pilot of Apollo 13. Following the in-flight explosion that crippled the mission in April 1970, Haise and his crewmates successfully returned to Earth after one of the most remarkable rescue efforts in spaceflight history. Although he never flew in space again, Haise played a pivotal role in the Space Shuttle program, serving as one of the principal test pilots for the Shuttle Approach and Landing Tests and later participating in Shuttle Training Aircraft evaluations that helped prepare astronauts for orbiter landings.
