Theodore “Dutch” Van Kirk and Robert A. Lewis autographed First Day Cover honoring President Harry S. Truman. Van Kirk has inscribed, “Navigator, Enola Gay,” while Lewis has added, “Co-Pilot - Hiroshima - Aug. 6, 1945.”

Theodore “Dutch” Van Kirk (1921-2014) served as navigator aboard the B-29 Enola Gay during the Hiroshima mission of August 6, 1945. A member of the 393rd Bombardment Squadron, 509th Composite Group, Van Kirk was responsible for navigating the aircraft from Tinian to Hiroshima and safely back following the first wartime use of an atomic bomb.
Robert A. Lewis (1917-1983) served as co-pilot of the B-29 Enola Gay during the Hiroshima mission on August 6, 1945. A member of the 393rd Bombardment Squadron, 509th Composite Group, Lewis assisted aircraft commander Paul W. Tibbets on the historic mission and later became widely known for his handwritten reaction in his flight log following the bombing: “My God, what have we done?”
