Robert “Hoot” Gibson (born 1946) is a former U.S. Navy captain and NASA astronaut who flew on five Space Shuttle missions, including commanding STS-27, STS-47, STS-71, and STS-77. Before joining NASA, he served as a naval aviator and test pilot at the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, where he evaluated high-performance military aircraft. Over the course of his astronaut career, Gibson logged more than 36 days in space and played a significant role in the Space Shuttle program as both pilot and commander.
