Joseph H. Scranton autographed handwritten letter (ALS) “J. H. Scranton,” one page on attractive The Lackawanna Iron & Coal Co. letterhead, dated November 11, 1868, from Scranton, Pennsylvania. Addressed to a Mr. Prudent, the letter concerns the proposed location of a foundry and discusses the suitability of a tract of land for industrial development.

In the letter, Scranton writes that company representatives, including W. Cushing and Mr. Rockwell, carefully examined the property intended for the foundry and concluded that the tract was “the most desirable location.” He further notes that the site would not be subject to “very serious objections” and recommends adoption of the proposed plan. The correspondence provides a firsthand glimpse into the industrial planning and expansion activities that helped shape Scranton, Pennsylvania, one of the most important iron and coal centers of the nineteenth century.

Joseph Hand Scranton (1811-1872) was an American industrialist, founder of the city of Scranton, Pennsylvania, and one of the principal figures behind the success of the Lackawanna Iron & Coal Company. Along with his brothers, he transformed northeastern Pennsylvania into a major center of iron production and railroad development. The city of Scranton ultimately took its name from the family, and Joseph H. Scranton served as one of the region’s most influential business leaders during the industrial expansion of the mid-nineteenth century.
