Rufus Choate (1799-1859) was one of the most celebrated American lawyers, orators, and statesmen of the nineteenth century. A graduate of Dartmouth College and Harvard Law School, he served in both the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate, succeeding Daniel Webster in the Senate in 1841. Choate achieved national fame as an advocate before the bar, where his brilliant courtroom arguments and extraordinary command of language earned him a reputation as one of the finest legal minds of his era. He remained an influential figure in Massachusetts politics and public life until his death in 1859.
