Details:
David Williams autographed handwritten manuscript document, entirely in his hand, dated Mansfield, January 4, 1836. Addressed to “Hon. Alford Cannan,” the manuscript reads in full: “I promised to pay him on order Seventeen Dollars on Demand,” and is boldly signed “David Williams” at the conclusion. The document measures approximately 7.75 x 2.75", and remains a scarce late-life manuscript entirely penned by one of the surviving participants in the Boston Tea Party.
Good condition, with scattered staining, intersecting folds, and general age wear.
David Williams (1759-1836) was a Boston mariner and one of the documented participants in the Boston Tea Party of December 16, 1773. Approximately fourteen years old at the time, he was among the youngest known participants in the famous protest against British taxation that helped set the colonies on the path toward independence. Although little is known of his later life, he is believed he may have engaged in privateering during the Revolutionary War aboard the ship General Arnold. His surviving autographs are scarce and are closely associated with one of the defining events in early American history.
