Gerrit Smith autographed one-page handwritten letter signed (ALS), dated 1840 and sent from Peterboro, New York. Signed at the conclusion, “Very respectfully yours, Gerrit Smith.”

Gerrit Smith (1797-1874) was one of the wealthiest and most influential abolitionists in nineteenth-century America. A prominent philanthropist, reformer, and political activist, he devoted his fortune to the causes of abolition, women’s rights, temperance, and land reform, while also providing substantial financial support to the Underground Railroad. Smith was a close associate of many leading antislavery figures, including Frederick Douglass and John Brown, and was among the famed “Secret Six” who financially backed Brown prior to the 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry. Letters from Smith during the height of the antebellum reform movement are highly desirable artifacts documenting one of the era’s foremost advocates for social justice and emancipation.
