Wendell Phillips (1811-1884) was one of America’s greatest nineteenth-century abolitionists and orators. Renowned for his uncompromising advocacy of the immediate abolition of slavery, Phillips became one of the leading voices of the antislavery movement alongside William Lloyd Garrison and other reformers. Following the Civil War, he continued to champion civil rights, women’s suffrage, Native American rights, and labor reform. His concise maxim, “Be Just & Fear Not,” reflects the unwavering moral courage and principled conviction that defined his remarkable public life.
