Wendell Phillips autographed handwritten quotation signed (AQS), dated July 11, 1860, penned in Boston and inscribed to E. F. Andrews. In the manuscript, Phillips records a quotation attributed to the abolitionist John Brown:

“Count that day lost whose low descending sun
Sees, at thy hand, no worthy action done -
This couplet John Brown
taught to each of his children -
Wendell Phillips
July 11 ’60
For G. F. Andrews. Boston.”

The sheet measures 7.75 x 4.75". Near fine condition. Light age toning and scattered foxing consistent with age. 

Wendell Phillips (1811-1884) was one of the leading abolitionists and orators of the nineteenth century. A close ally of William Lloyd Garrison, Phillips devoted his career to the abolition of slavery and became one of its most influential public advocates. Following John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry in 1859, Phillips emerged as one of Brown’s most outspoken defenders, praising his moral conviction and helping to preserve his legacy. After the Civil War, Phillips continued to advocate for civil rights, women’s suffrage, and labor reform.
