Henry Ward Beecher autographed 6 x 3” slip, dated “Brooklyn June 3, 1876,” inscribed, “Cordially Yours Henry Ward Beecher.” The signed slip has been neatly affixed to a larger 7.75 x 5” cardstock mount. Affixed to the reverse is a period albumen portrait photograph of Beecher’s wife, Eunice Bullard Beecher, identified in period pencil beneath the image in an unknown hand.

Henry Ward Beecher (1813–1887) was one of the most celebrated clergymen, abolitionists, and public speakers of nineteenth-century America. As pastor of Plymouth Church in Brooklyn, New York, he became a leading voice against slavery, using his sermons and lecture tours to advocate for emancipation and social reform. During the Civil War he was among the Union’s most influential civilian supporters, raising funds, recruiting volunteers, and championing the Northern cause both in the United States and abroad. Beecher was also the brother of abolitionist author Harriet Beecher Stowe, whose landmark novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin galvanized anti-slavery sentiment throughout the nation. His autograph remains highly desirable for its associations with the abolition movement, the Civil War, and one of America’s most prominent reform families.

Eunice Bullard Beecher (1812–1897) was the wife of Henry Ward Beecher and a longtime partner in his ministry and public life. Married in 1837, she supported Beecher throughout his rise to national prominence while managing their household during decades of intense public scrutiny.
