Daniel E. Sickles autographed handwritten letter (ALS), two pages written on both sides of a single sheet, dated July 27, 1865, from New York City. Written entirely in Sickles’s hand and signed, “D. E. Sickles,” the letter concerns the employment prospects of a former soldier shortly after the close of the Civil War.

In this letter, Daniel Sickles strongly recommends the application of Patrick Burns, a discharged soldier seeking employment in the Public Stores. Sickles states that Burns is familiar with the duties of the position, having previously performed similar work, and emphasizes that he suffered injuries during military service. He argues that Burns’s wartime sacrifices and experience make him a deserving candidate for consideration, offering a revealing example of postwar efforts by prominent Union officers to assist veterans transitioning back into civilian life.

Daniel Edgar Sickles (1819–1914) was one of the most colorful and controversial figures of nineteenth-century America. A New York politician, diplomat, and Union general, he gained national notoriety before the Civil War for the sensational murder of Philip Barton Key, for which he successfully employed the first widely recognized temporary insanity defense in American legal history. During the Civil War he commanded the III Corps of the Army of the Potomac and played a pivotal role at Gettysburg, where he was severely wounded and lost a leg. Sickles later served as U.S. Minister to Spain, remained active in veterans’ affairs for decades, and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at Gettysburg.
